It is fair but no one likes to pay taxes, especially the rich. I know plenty of well to do people that hide their money. They put money into their kids' bank accounts so they qualify for programs or breaks that they might not otherwise get if their full income and assets were known. Plenty of rich people put their houses into just their spouse's name or into a trust. Don't forget about the people that hide money into tax shelters overseas. The middle class pay the highest proportion of income to taxes. I make about $40K a year but only take home $24K. I work really hard. I'm educated. Why should I have to pay such a high amount in taxes when it puts me barely treading water? I worry that I may become homeless. It's scary. I'm playing by the rules.
Someone making a lot more than me should pay more in taxes because they will still be ok whereas I might not. The middle class need tax cuts. The rich can afford to absorb the difference from us paying less. They will get something in return, a more stable economy. We will start buying more. We are in a consumer economy. What happens when consumers stop spending? Consumers were what was propping up our economy for many years.
But the rich have the power because with great wealth comes great power. Everyone wants a piece so they have more options. It is why we need a balance to meet in the middle between the wealthy and the middle class. Both sides have to give a little. The reason – security and stability for all.
Look where we are. Regulation is necessary.
edit: Regulation adds costs to businesses but it's necessary to prevent what we have now.

Sales tax is regressive – in that it applies to a greater proportion of the income of the poor than the wealthy. The wealthy can accumulate their earnings and not be taxed on that portion. The poor spend all that they earn.
That's why.
"greater proportion of earnings" – as a percentage. Of course the rich spend more – they earn more, but they would also have a large amount of earnings that remain untaxed.
Or are you disregarding percentage as a basis of taxation and actually wanting people to pay the same dollar amount regardless of income?

Are you saying that you want to benefit from this country but you don’t want to pay for it? You mentioned 3 different kinds of taxes; income, sales, property that have nothing to do with each other.
Federal income taxes have nothing to do with what you are talking about. The other 2 kinds are levied by the state; your state could have an income tax also.
I think you state has 3 different kinds of taxes so that everyone pays something. Retired people who wouldn’t pay income taxes still have to pay property and sales taxes. Rich people would pay all 3 kinds and kids would at least pay sales taxes.
For most of this country’s history property taxes funded government, its only in the last 75 years or so that the income tax has become the real predictor or wealth.

Go on http://www.homesales.gov and you can see all the active properties for anywhere in the U.S. Make sure you read the property condition reports. Also you will see that they suggest getting a home inspection for any property before purchasing it. You can click on any property on the site for a real estate agent that is actually interested in selling these properties to you. A buyer's agent is a good idea as well, but a listed HUD agent should be cooperative and lead you through the steps needed to buy any of these houses. They are actually easier than purchasing a normal house but you need to be informed. Good luck to you, I purchased several HUD houses over the years and was satisfied with all of them.

The law probably has a lot to do with politics, and the vast poor population that seems to be weaned on marxist propaganda of class warfare, and 'free land' political promises by socialists and marxists. The idea of rich foriegners owning land is not popular in a nation with vast poor, homeless squaters, who have some delusion that if land were distributed to the poor, poverty and unemployment would vanish, as the homeless, landless would be transformed into prosperous, self sufficient farmers.. a nice fantasy.. to say the least. In reality, in almost all cases where large foriegn owned or corporate plantations are shut down, and land 're-distributed' to the poor, the productive farmland is turned into unproductive ghettos of crime, violence, unemployment, poverty, etc.. With this as the back drop of the land redistribution scheme, certain plantations owned by filipinos were exempt, and only the lands owned by foriegners were siezed, under the land laws of the 1980's. .. this was a most conveneint compromise for wealthy filipino landowners, who were able to divert the hostility of the poor to foriegners, and not lose thier own land holdings. As a side note, marxist promises of 'free land' are almost always simply propaganda and lies used to gain popular support for communist rule.. ie: in both Russia and China, peasants were promised land reform, 'free land', and redistribution of land owned by the wealthy to the poor, after the peasants helped to kill, destroy the wealthy ruling class and landowners, they were instead forced to work in 'communal farms', and no individual land ownership was given, as previously promised. In order to fill the gulags with free slave labor, and to increase the wealth and power of the communist leaders, even small farmers with more than 2 cows were deemed to be Kulaks, rich, greedy enimies of the state, who were found guilty of subversion, seized of thier lands, and sent to Gulags to be worked to death as slaves.
As a foriegner, you are the target of marxist class warfare propaganda that is prevalent in the Philippines, and land ownership makes you a bigger target. Btw, land in most places in the Philippines is not 'cheap' compared to the USA, where raw land in the south and midwest is much cheaper than most of the developed areas of the Philippines, especially around urban areas like Manila.
I have to agree with you that a more simple land tax and exemption scheme would be a better way to encourage home and land ownership. say steep progressive taxes on real estate, with a fairly generous homestead tax exemption of say 2M PhP for each filipino citizen. this would encourage more filipinos to own small parcels of land, and tax heavily foriegners and large landholders.

People don't care about military people any more than they care about anyone else, and I hold a controversial opinion on this, because I think that's how it ought to be. I mean, people will acknowlege the military with, as you mention, yellow ribbons and things like that, but this is mainly out of fad and peer-pressure to be patriotic. The reason I don't think we deserve any more than any other hard-working American, is because everyone contributes to the sovereignty of our country. As military people, we stand by in case we are invaded, but other people, especially those who work to make a product or provide a service maintain our economy, without which, we would not have sovereignty. We all contribute to our society and civilization. Nobody's job is more vital than anyone else's. You mention that the military contributes to the economy, which it doesn't. That's not an opinion, that's just reality. No economist will disagree with that. The Defense Department consumes more than 50% of tax revenue. Whatever contributions the military makes in various local economies, it takes a lot more than their contribution in tax revenue. And the more taxes people pay, the slower the economic growth. And the military does not even contribute to local economies. All the servicemembers would still exist if they weren't in the military and they each contribute to market necessities, regardless of them being in the military or not. Military personel live under a completely socialistic economy. Our food, healthcare, housing and other needs are all completely covered. If you live a lifestyle beyond this coverage, that is your own fault. In addition to this, we receive a paycheck every month that is very competitive with private jobs. Everyone in the private world has to live by the roll of the dice. Their jobs aren't nearly as secure as ours, they have to provide their own very expensive healthcare, childcare, food and shelter without any help from their employers, what makes you think that they owe the military anything? The private sector pays your salary, the civilians pay your salary, that's the way the economy works. You provide a service, they pay you, end of transaction. But for some reason, military people think they should be entitled to a bottomless pit of benefits. If you are in or were in the military and expect anything in return, you were in for the wrong reasons. Go into the military to better yourself, to receive an education, because of love of the art of battle and war and because you think the nation is worth losing your life for. You are not going to get rich and you are not going to get anyone's attention besides a simple "thank you". And you shouldn't expect anything more.
